Ode 110

HELPLESS, we look for help—Sweet Heaven, save!
For pain like ours is there no remedy?
Is there no end to it this side the grave?

Our hearts we gave them, and our souls we gave;
There are no bounds to their rapacity;
Our very lives they seek—Sweet Heaven, save!

Helpless, we look for help—Sweet Heaven, save!
For mortal kisses an immortal price—
No less than our immortal souls—they crave.

Beautiful creatures of the lustful grave,
Ghouls of the sad necropolis of vice,
Drunken with dead men's blood—Sweet Heaven, save!

Helpless, we look for help—Sweet Heaven, save!
Dark is the night! will daylight never come,
And bring that union with my love I crave?

Endless the days and nights to grief I gave,
Yet each new day brings a new martyrdom;
Helpless is HAFIZ—can Sweet Heaven save?
