THE QUARTERS OF THE GLOBE.

The Hindus term a quarter diśá and also dig* and of these they reckon ten. Each of them they consider to be under a tutelary spirit whom they name Dig-pála as will appear in the following table:—

Sanskrit name of quarter. English. Regent.
Púrva East Indra.
Agni South-east Agni.*
Dakshiṇa South Yama.
Nairṛita South-west Nairṛita.
Paśchima West Varuṇa.
Váyavíya North-west Vayu.
Uttara North Kuvera.
I´śána North-east I´śána.
U´rddhva Above Brahma.
Adhaḥ Below Nága.

Some assign a quarter to the interval between the upper and lower regions and thus reckon eleven. The regent of this is Rudra.
