SAYYID MUḤAMMAD JAUNPÚRÍ

Was the son of Sayyid Baḍh Uwaysí. He received instruction under many holy men and was learned in spiritual and secular knowledge. Carried away by extravagance he laid claim to be a Mahdí* and many followers gathered round him and numerous miracles are ascribed to him. He is the origin of the Mahdavís. From Jaunpúr he went to Gujarát and was much in favour with Sulṭán Maḥmúd the Great. The narrow-mindedness of worldlings made India intolerable to him and he resolved to pass into Persia, but died at Farrah and was there buried.
