When the sovereignty of Delhi devolved upon Sulṭán Maḥmúd the grandson of Sulṭán Fíroz, and the office of chief minister upon Mallú Khán, all systematic administration and knowledge of affairs ceased to exist and the government fell into discredit. At this period the sublime Standards approached as has already been briefly described. Notwith­standing the conquest of so populous a kingdom, the booty obtained was not important, and the invaders impelled by love of their native land, retired from the country.
