O LOVELINESS divine, that unespied
Didst wait discovery on Thy curtained throne,
As ruby in its rocky lair unknown,
Or pearl ensconced beneath the unconscious tide,
Or flowers that folded in the bud abide
Till comes the zephyr where they dream alone
Kissing them into blushing life—so, sown
Within man’s heart Thy seeds all mute reside.
O Love! these hidden seeds are germs of fire,
Which, when the revelation of Thy name
Passes upon them, quickening desire,
As zephyr on the roses, burst in flame
And, shooting upwards, to the skies aspire,
Seeking to reach the source from which they came.
