Tabataba'i, ʿAlī ibn ʿAzīz-Allāh

Historian

ʿAlī ibn ʿAzīz-Allāh Ṭabāṭabāʾī immigrated to the Asian sub-continent from al-ʿIrāq and eventually found his way into the service of the Niẓām Šāhīs during the last quarter of the 10th/16th century. He is entirely known for his work Burhān al-maʾāir.

Burhān al-maʾāir is a history of the Bahmanīd and Niẓām Šāh dynasties, two autonomous kingdoms that ruled (or claimed to rule) in the Deccan at different points during the period between the 8th/14th century and the first half of the 11th/17th century. The Bahmanīds were a line of Muslim sultans who ruled over various parts of the Deccan from 748/1347 to 933/1527. The Niẓām Šāhīs emerged in the Deccan just as the Bahmanīd dynasty began to disintegrate and were able to maintain some notion of regional rule until their kingdom was effectively dispersed in 1046/1636 through the work of Šāh Jahān. Burhān al-maʾāir extends to the year 1004/1596 and was composed at the request of Burhān Niẓām Šāh (r. 999/1591 to 1003/1595).
