Mystic
Ṣunʿ-Allāh Ğaybī “was born between 1615 and 1620 in the small town of Chowdar-Kalburcu, in the province of Kutahya in what is now Turkey. Born into a family of religious people, he was educated and trained by them as a youngster. His father, Šaykh Ahmet Effendi, was a Mufti, a Muslim scholar officially appointed religious head of a town. Later in life he joined the path of Melâmet and advised his son to do the same. Sun’ullah’s paternal great-grandfather had been the Šaykh of Kalburcu and wrote a booklet about contemplation. In 1649, when he was in his early twenties, Sun’ullah went to Istanbul and became a dervish in the circle of Šaykh of Olanlar, Ibrāhīm Effendi, on of the best representatives of the teaching of Šaykh Lamekane Hussein Effendi. He stayed for six years there and in 1655 he returned to his home town in Kutahya, where he built a center and taught. His tomb is there and some of his descendants are said to be still living there. Gaïbi produced five known works”.
