Šihāb al-Dīn Aḥmad Ṭāliš was in the service of Mīr Jumlah, a commander in Mughal ruler Awrangzīb’s (see Awrangzīb (ʿĀlamgīr I)) army during the early years of his reign. In 1072/1661–2, Šihāb al-Dīn accompanied Mīr Jumlah on a military expedition, during which Mīr Jumlah and other commanders sought to conceal their poor performance and the “sufferings and losses of the Imperial army”. In an effort to write a truthful account of this expedition, Šihāb al-Dīn wrote an eyewitness account of the events entitled Fatḥiyyah-yi ʿIbriyya (also referred to as Fatḥiyyah-yi ʿIbratīyyah, Tārīḫ-i Āšām, and ārīḫ-i mulk-I Āšām). The work was composed in 1073/1663.
