Historian and Poet

Muḥammad Šafīʿ “Vārid” ibn Muḥammad Šarīf Ṭiḥrānī is known mostly for his work on the history of the Mughals entitled Mirʾāt-i Vāridat. Mirʾāt-i Vāridat begins with the time of Bābur, the founder of the Mughal Empire, and extends to the 16th year of Muḥammad Šāh’s reign (1146/1733–4), the year the work was completed. Mirʾāt-i Vāridat appeared in a later recension under the title Tārīḫ-i Čağatāʾī. Tārīḫ-i Čağatāʾī extends to Nādir Šāh’s departure from India in 1152/1739. Muḥammad Šafī also left a dīvān of verses and several manavīs.
