Jamāl ibn Mīr Jalāl al-Dīn Ḥusaynī Šīrāzī, Siyyid

Siyyid Jamāl ibn Mīr Jalāl al-Dīn Ḥusaynī Šīrāzī was in the service Mīrzā Muḥammad Ṣāliḥ, who served as Subah dār (head of provincial government) of Sind during the reign of Mughal ruler Šāh Jahān. Eager to know of his genealogy and ancestry, Muḥammad Ṣāliḥ asked Siyyid Jamāl Ḥusaynī to locate a book that dealt with such topics, entitled Tarḫān-nāmah. Unable to find this book, the author wrote his own work on the genealogy of his patron and called it Tarḫān-nāmah, also referred to as Arğūn-nāmah. Tarḫān-nāmah is a history of the Tarḫān and Arğūn dynasties of Sind (who ruled from 926/1520 to 961/1554 and 961/1554 to 100/1592 respectively) and those dynasties’ Mongol ancestors, extending to the death of Mīrzā Ṣāliḥ’s father in 1061/1651. Much of the Tarḫān-nāmah is largely extracted from Mīr Muḥammad Maʿṣūm’s Tārīḫ-i Sind. Siyyid Jamāl’s Tarḫān-nāmah was composed ca. 1065/1654–5.
