Īsār Dās Nāgar

Historian, (1110/1698)

Historian

Ealry in his career Īsār Dās Nāgar was employed by the chief qāżī in Ahmadābād and thereafter by the governorship of Gujarāt. Later on, he was to gain favor from Mughal Emperor Awrangzīb (see Awrangzīb (ʿĀlamgīr I)) by successfully returning a princess (one of the emperor’s granddaughters) to the imperial household. Īsār Dās Nāgar’s fame rests entirely on his work Futūḥāt-i ʿĀlamgīrī.

Futūḥāt-i ʿĀlamgīrī is a contemporary history of Awrangzīb’s reign extending to either 1110/1698 or 1101–2/1690–1. Its greatest value lies in the fact that it was written by a non-Muslim who had access to many imperial resources and was an eye-witness to many events of his time.
