Poet/Writer
A gifted Hindū poet and prose writer who wrote in Persian, Čandarbān Barahman served various high officials during the reign of Mughal Emperor Šāh Jahān. Later on, Čandarbān Barahman was presented to Šāh Jahān himself. Having made an impression on the Emperor, the poet was designated as Šāh Jahān’s court chronicler. He accompanied Šāh Jahān on his journeys and recorded his daily occurrences. Čandarbān Barahman composed numerous works in poetry and prose perhaps the most famous among them being Čahār čaman.
Čahār čaman is a work divided into four parts: descriptions of various festivals, the daily life of Šāh Jahān, comments on the author’s own life and letters, and the author’s moral and religious reflections. Čandarbān Barahman’s date of death is not known for certain, but 1073/1662–3 and 1068/1657–8 have been offered as two likely possibilities.
